2ND EDITION MOLESTINA
“The second Molestina headed north through Ecuador, covering Tumbabiro, Tulcán, and the Chiles Volcano. This route is exceptionally scenic but comes with significant challenges due to the predominantly unpaved roads, which can be quite unpredictable. This uncertainty is part of the adventure, requiring readiness for any eventuality.
The first leg to Tulcán went smoothly, and we completed it relatively quickly. The following day, we traveled to Chiles Volcano, located in the border area with Colombia. The scenery here is breathtaking, with páramos filled with majestic frailejones and lagoons—truly a natural wonder.
After crossing the volcano, we proceeded west to Maldonado. This area is known to be somewhat dangerous due to smuggling activities. I was surprised to see, along several stretches of the road, crews in reflective vests and helmets working on the road and ditches, all riding motorcycles with Colombian plates. Despite being on a nearly abandoned road in good condition, we only encountered two Colombian vehicles and maintenance crews, leading me to wonder if, without realizing it, we had crossed into Colombia.
Upon reaching Maldonado, two soldiers stopped us and asked to inspect our cargo and documents. Once they confirmed we were Ecuadorian, they no longer bothered us. When I asked if we were in Ecuador or Colombia, they said we were in Ecuador, although the Colombian crews along the route seemed to suggest otherwise. The lack of a clear answer made me suspect the source of funding for these operations. In this area, it’s best to avoid asking questions and to keep moving without pausing.
The experience was intense and interesting, and the group was pleased to have completed this adventure in unfamiliar territory.”
