DAY 1

A Day Among Volcanoes, Condors, and Andean Culture

Begin your journey from Quito heading northeast into the highlands of Pichincha and the majestic canton of Cayambe. As you ride through rolling hills and farmland framed by the towering Cayambe Volcano, you’ll pass through traditional villages and enjoy sweeping views of the Andean páramo. Your first stop will be the town of Cayambe, known for its rich agricultural heritage and its iconic biscochos—a perfect chance to experience local life and flavors.

From there, the road leads to the Parque del Cóndor, a unique sanctuary where you can witness the awe-inspiring flight of the Andean condor and other native birds of prey in a breathtaking mountain setting. The journey continues to Otavalo, famous for its vibrant indigenous market, where textiles, crafts, and colors bring centuries-old culture to life.

After soaking in the local energy, you’ll head to nearby Cotacachi for a traditional lunch at El Leñador, a cozy restaurant that serves authentic highland cuisine in a rustic setting. Post-lunch, enjoy a short stroll through Cotacachi’s artisan district before continuing along scenic mountain roads to Lago Cuicocha—a stunning crater lake formed by a collapsed volcano. Surrounded by rugged peaks and lush vegetation, Cuicocha offers peaceful waters, boat rides, and panoramic viewpoints that make it an unforgettable stop.

Before returning to Quito, make time for Lago San Pablo, one of Ecuador’s largest and most picturesque lakes, nestled at the foot of Imbabura Volcano. This tranquil lake is perfect for a quiet walk along the shore, a canoe ride, or simply soaking in the view with a warm drink. Rich in cultural significance and natural beauty, it’s the perfect final stop to complete a day filled with nature, tradition, and Andean charm.
